Pierwszy raz utwór nagrano w 1971 roku. Kawałek został napisany przez Charlesa Foxa i Normana Gimbela. Pierwszą wokalistką, która zaśpiewała przebój była Lori Lieberman. Inspiracją do napisania piosenki była książka Julio Cortázara "Gra w klasy", a dokładniej drugi rozdział, gdzie pojawia się fraza "kill us softly with some blues". Według autora muzyki pianistka nagrała wersję szybszą urozmaiconą o rytm synkopowany, którego nie było w latach 90. zespół The Fugees dał drugie życie "Killing Me Softly". Cover uzyskał uznanie publiczności i płyta zespołu "The Score", na której się znalazł, sprzedała się jak ciepłe bułeczki. Grupa wydała później dwa legendarne single "Ready or Not" i "Fu-Gee-La". Roberta Flack first heard the song on a flight from Los Angeles to New York City (where Lori Lieberman’s version was featured on the in-flight audio program). In September of 1972, Roberta was opening up for Marvin Gaye at the Greek Theater. After she performed the encore song she prepared, Marvin advised her to sing another song. According to Roberta: I said well, I got this song I’ve been working on called ‘Killing Me Softly’ and he [Marvin Gaye] said ‘Do it, baby’ And I did and the audience went crazy, and he walked over to me and put his arm around me and said, ‘Baby, don’t ever do that song again live until you record it.’“ Roberta’s version of “Killing Me Softly” was released in January of 1973. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks in February of 1973 and later for a week in March of 1973. She won two Grammy Awards in 1973 for “Record of the Year” and “Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female.”Killing me softly with his song Killing me softly with his song Telling my whole life with his words Killing me softly with his song He sang as if it he knew me In all my dark despair And then he looked right through me As if I wasn't there But he was there, this stranger Singing clear and strong Strumming my pain with his fingers Singing myI heard he sang a good song I heard he had a style And so I came to see him To listen for a while And there he was this young boy A stranger to my eyes Strumming my pain with his fingers Singing my life with his words Killing me softly with his song Killing me softly with his song Telling my whole life with his words Killing me softly with his song I felt all flushed with fever Embarassed by the crowd I felt he found my letters And read each one out loud I prayed that he would finish But he just kept right on Strumming my pain with his fingers Singing my life with his words Killing me softly with his song Killing me softly with his song Telling my whole life with his words Killing me softly with his song He sang as if he knew me In all my dark despair And then he looked right through me As if I wasn't there But he was there, this stranger Singing clear and strong Strumming my pain with his fingers Singing my life with his words Killing me softly with his song Killing me softly with his song Telling my whole life with his words Killing me softly with his song 12 jaar geleden voor het laatst gewijzigd heeft toestemming van Stichting FEMU om deze songtekst te tonen.
